🇨🇦 After Your Canada PR — Complete Life Guide 2026

● Last updated June 30, 2026|VisaCalc Editorial Team
📅 June 2026⏱ 12 min read🇨🇦 Canada PR

Congratulations on your Canada PR! Now comes the most important phase — building your new life in Canada while following all immigration rules. This guide covers everything: where to study, how to earn more, and the critical do's and don'ts that protect your PR status.

❓ Common Questions After Getting PR

Can I work two jobs on PR?

Yes — PR status carries no restriction on the number of jobs or hours you can work, unlike a study or work permit. The only limits that apply are the same ones any Canadian worker faces: your employment contract terms and standard labour law (overtime rules, rest periods).

How do I get citizenship faster?

You can't fast-track the core requirement — you need 1,095 days (3 years) of physical presence in Canada within the 5 years before applying, and time spent in Canada before becoming a PR counts at half value (up to a max of 365 days). What you can control is applying the moment you hit the threshold, keeping your tax filings current (required for all years you were a resident), and avoiding long trips abroad that reset your presence clock.

What are the best provinces to settle in?

There's no single "best" — it depends on your field and priorities. Ontario and BC have the largest job markets but the highest living costs (especially Toronto and Vancouver). Alberta offers no provincial income tax and strong energy/engineering jobs. Atlantic provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick) offer lower costs of living and active newcomer retention programs. Match the province to your industry, not just the headline cost of living.

Can I study on PR?

Yes, and it's often financially smart to — PRs pay domestic tuition rates, not the much higher international rates, at Canadian colleges and universities. Many PRs use this to retrain into a higher-paying field or get a Canadian credential that's more recognized by local employers than a foreign one.

📚 Where to Study in Canada

📚 Where to Study in Canada

As a permanent resident, you pay domestic tuition rates — the same as Canadian citizens. This is a massive financial advantage. International students pay 3–5x more for the same programs.

UniversityProvinceKnown ForAnnual Tuition (Domestic)
University of TorontoOntarioMedicine, Law, Business~$7,000–14,000
UBC (Vancouver)BCTech, Engineering, Sciences~$5,500–10,000
McGill UniversityQuebecMedicine, Law, Arts~$3,000–10,000
University of WaterlooOntarioComputer Science, Co-op~$8,000–14,000
University of AlbertaAlbertaEngineering, Oil & Gas, Med~$6,000–11,000
Dalhousie UniversityNova ScotiaOcean Sciences, Medicine~$8,000–13,000

Trade schools and colleges are also excellent options. Programs at community colleges like Seneca, George Brown, or BCIT cost $3,000–8,000/year and often lead directly to high-demand jobs.

💰 How to Earn Extra Points Toward Citizenship

Canada citizenship requires 1,095 days (3 years) of physical presence in Canada out of the last 5 years before applying. There are no "extra points" for citizenship — it's purely a days count. But here's how to maximise your path:

  • Track every day carefully — use the IRCC physical presence calculator. Trips outside Canada reduce your count.
  • File Canadian taxes every year — required for citizenship application
  • Pass the citizenship test — covers Canadian history, values, rights. Study the "Discover Canada" guide (free online)
  • Prove language proficiency — English or French at CLB 4 minimum (much lower than Express Entry)
  • Apply early — as soon as you hit 1,095 days. Processing takes 12–18 months currently

✅ DO's — Rules That Protect Your PR Status

✅ DO: Maintain Your PR Residency Obligation

You must be physically present in Canada for 730 days (2 years) in every 5-year period to keep your PR status. Count your days carefully. If you travel frequently for work, this is your biggest risk.

✅ DO: File Canadian Taxes Every Year

File your T1 tax return by April 30 every year, even if your income is zero. CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) is the main authority. Failure to file is a red flag for citizenship applications and PR renewals.

✅ DO: Get a Social Insurance Number (SIN) Immediately

Apply at a Service Canada office within days of landing. Your SIN is required for all employment, banking, and government services. Without it, you cannot legally work.

✅ DO: Enroll in Provincial Health Insurance

Each province has free public health insurance (OHIP in Ontario, MSP in BC, AHCIP in Alberta). There is typically a 3-month waiting period after arrival. Get private insurance for the first 3 months.

✅ DO: Build Canadian Credit History Early

Your Indian or international credit history does not transfer. Start building Canadian credit immediately: get a secured credit card, pay it off every month. Good credit is needed for renting, car loans, and mortgages.

❌ DON'Ts — What Can Get Your PR Revoked

❌ DON'T: Work Cash in Hand / Off the Books

Never accept cash-in-hand work that is not declared to CRA. This is tax evasion. If discovered, it can affect your citizenship application and even your PR status. All income must be declared — including tips, freelance work, and side income.

❌ DON'T: Break Canadian Law — Even Minor Offences

A criminal record can result in PR revocation and deportation. This includes: driving under the influence (DUI), shoplifting, domestic disputes that become police matters, and any assault charges. Canada has zero tolerance for criminal activity by PRs.

❌ DON'T: Stay Outside Canada More Than 3 Years in 5

If you spend more than 3 years outside Canada in any 5-year period, you risk losing your PR status. CBSA officers at the border check your travel history. If your residency obligation is not met when your PR card expires, you cannot re-enter Canada on your PR card.

❌ DON'T: Overstay on a Study or Work Permit Before Getting PR

If your study or work permit expires before your PR is approved, you must maintain valid status or leave Canada. Working without authorisation, even for one day, is a violation that can affect your PR application.

❌ DON'T: Work More Than 20 Hours/Week on a Student Visa (If Studying)

If you are studying on a student permit (before PR), you are limited to 24 hours per week (increased from 20 in 2024) during academic sessions. On designated vacations and breaks you can work full-time. Exceeding these hours is a violation.

❌ DON'T: Misrepresent Anything to IRCC

Misrepresentation — providing false information to IRCC at any stage — results in a 5-year ban from Canada and possible deportation. This includes: false employment letters, fake language test certificates, hiding previous immigration violations, and incorrect declarations at the border.

📋 First 30 Days in Canada Checklist

  • ✅ Get a SIN from Service Canada (bring your PR card and passport)
  • ✅ Open a Canadian bank account (TD, RBC, Scotiabank, BMO, CIBC)
  • ✅ Apply for provincial health card (OHIP/MSP/AHCIP)
  • ✅ Get a Canadian SIM card and phone plan
  • ✅ Apply for a secured credit card to start building credit
  • ✅ Get a Canadian driver's licence (exchange your foreign licence)
  • ✅ Register children in local school
  • ✅ Find a family doctor (GP) — waitlists can be long, register early
  • ✅ Set up CRA (tax) account online
  • ✅ Start counting physical presence days for citizenship
