Canada study permit refusal rates have increased in 2026 due to higher application volumes and stricter Genuine Student assessments. Here are the 10 most common reasons โ and exactly what to do to fix each one.
What the officer sees: Bank balance doesn't clearly show CAD $20,635 (living) + full tuition + return airfare.
How to fix: Use a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a Canadian bank. Show bank statements for the last 6 months โ not just the most recent. Explain any large recent deposits with supporting documents (salary slips, business receipts, property sale letter).
What the officer sees: No clear reason why you would return home after studies.
How to fix: Include: employment letter from Indian employer (if employed), property ownership documents, family dependency documents (dependant children or elderly parents), proof of assets in India.
What the officer sees: Cannot explain why this specific program, at this specific university, in Canada.
How to fix: Write a detailed Statement of Purpose (SOP) explaining: your academic background โ gap in your knowledge/career โ why this program fills it โ why Canada specifically โ your career plan after returning home.
What the officer sees: A large sum appeared in your account shortly before application.
How to fix: Apply 6 months after building your funds. Or provide full documentation of where the money came from (sale of property, inheritance with will, business income with ITR). GIC certificates from a Canadian bank are the cleanest option.
What the officer sees: Undergraduate or college applicant with no Provincial Attestation Letter.
How to fix: Contact your university/college โ they obtain the PAL/TAL from the province and provide it to you. Master's and PhD students are exempt from this requirement from January 2026.
