Since April 2025, meat and dairy from the EU is banned outright. Here's the current allowance, penalty structure, and how to choose the right channel.
🚨 The Most Common Mistake: EU Meat or Dairy "For Personal Use"
Since 12 April 2025, it is illegal to bring cattle, sheep, goat or pig meat, or any dairy products, from any EU country into Great Britain — even vacuum-sealed, even duty-free, even a small amount for personal use. The fix: leave EU meat and dairy at home, and if you're carrying it anyway, use the red channel.
| Violation | Penalty |
|---|---|
| Meat/dairy from EU (banned since April 2025) | Seizure + fine up to £5,000 |
| False declaration in green channel (goods) | Seizure of goods + up to 3× the duty evaded |
| Undeclared cash over £10,000 | Seizure + fine up to £5,000; burden of proof on traveller |
| Serious/repeat offence | Prosecution; no cap on penalty in severe cases |
There is no warning system for first-time violations at the UK border — items are confiscated regardless of whether you knew the rule, and fines can follow immediately.
| Item | Allowance |
|---|---|
| General goods | £390 (£270 if arriving by private plane/boat) |
| Spirits & liquors over 22% ABV | 4 litres |
| Other alcoholic drinks under 22% ABV | 9 litres |
| Cigarettes | 200 (or equivalent in other tobacco products) |
Exceeding the £390 limit means duty and VAT apply to the entire amount in that category — not just the excess over the limit.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions — United Kingdom Customs
Can I bring cheese or salami from an EU country as a gift?
No. Since 12 April 2025, all meat, dairy, cattle, sheep, goat and pig products from any EU country are banned from entering Great Britain for personal use, regardless of packaging or intended use. Items will be seized and fines up to £5,000 can apply.
Is using the red channel a sign I've done something wrong?
No. The red channel simply means you have something to declare, or you're unsure. Officers check your items and guide you — there's no penalty for declaring correctly. The real risk is choosing green with undeclared goods.
What happens if I'm found in the green channel with undeclared goods?
Border Force can seize everything in that allowance category, not just the amount over the limit, plus fines of up to three times the duty evaded. This is treated as a false declaration, not an administrative slip.
Do duty-free purchases count toward my £390 allowance?
Yes. The £390 figure covers everything you bring in regardless of where it was purchased — duty-free shop, high street, or online. "Duty-free" only means VAT wasn't charged at the point of sale.
Is pepper spray really treated as a firearm in the UK?
Yes. Pepper spray, mace, and CS gas are classified as firearms under Section 5(1)(b) of the Firearms Act 1968. Carrying them can result in a mandatory prison sentence — this is one of the most common traps for US travellers.
