A major fake-degree fraud ring was uncovered in 2026, prompting Home Affairs to tighten documentation requirements for several source countries.
🚨 What You Need to Know
In late 2025/early 2026, Australian and Indian authorities uncovered a criminal network that had produced nearly 100,000 fake degrees linked to institutions across dozens of universities, sold for AUD $1,250-$2,500 each. Over 4,200 students had qualifications cancelled, and 23,000+ were found to have purchased fraudulent credentials for visa or job applications.
Criminal printing networks producing counterfeit degrees with forged signatures — buyers face visa cancellation, deportation, and in some cases criminal referral, regardless of whether they believed the documents were real.
Some recruiting agents secure acceptance letters through fraudulent means to speed up visa processing or make visa interview slots — using such an agent puts your entire visa application at risk even if you personally did nothing wrong.
Scammers impersonating Home Affairs demand urgent payment via untraceable methods (gift cards, crypto, wire transfer) to resolve a fabricated visa issue.
Following the fraud crackdown, Home Affairs raised documentation requirements (bank statements, authenticated transcripts) for applicants from several high-risk-designated countries — expect more scrutiny even as a genuine applicant.
